Substation Ground Grid Testing, Anywhere in America

When a utility needs verified proof that a grounding system will protect its people and its assets, they need more than a low bid — they need a partner that tests to IEEE 80 and 81 methodology, documents to engineering standards, and mobilizes on short notice. Truett Critical Infrastructure delivers ground grid testing, mapping, and substation services to electric utilities across all 50 states.

Ground Grid Testing & Mapping

A substation's ground grid is the single system standing between a fault event and a fatality. It's also the one system you can't inspect by looking at it — buried conductors corrode, connections fail, and soil conditions drift, all invisibly, while design assumptions from decades ago quietly stop being true.

Verification requires measurement. We field-test grounding systems against their design basis using IEEE Std 80 and IEEE Std 81 methodology — measuring what's actually in the ground, not what the drawings say should be. The result is an engineering-grade picture of grid resistance, current-carrying integrity, and personnel safety compliance that stands up to internal audit, regulatory review, and relay coordination studies.

Whether it's a commissioning test on new construction, a periodic assessment on an aging grid, or a post-event investigation, our crews deliver the same thing every time: defensible data, clear findings, and a prioritized path to remediation.

Every Engagement Delivers

Located conductors, connections, and test points — CAD deliverable

Soil Resistivity Profiles

Multi-layer soil models supporting grid design and upgrades

Touch & Step Voltage Compliance Tables

Pass/fail against IEEE 80 tolerable limits, location by location

Prioritized Remediation Plan

Ranked corrective actions with budgetary pricing — we can self-perform
Testing Services

A Complete Grounding Assessment Program

Each test is performed to published IEEE methodology, witnessed and documented in the field, and reported against your design basis — not a generic template.

Soil Resistivity Surveys
Wenner four-point traverses across multiple orientations and spacings, reduced to multi-layer soil models. The foundation of every credible grid design, upgrade study, and GPR calculation.
Fall-of-Potential Testing
Ground grid resistance measured per IEEE Std 81, with full slope-method validation and lead placements engineered around site constraints — congested corridors, energized yards, and limited right-of-way included.
Grid Integrity & Continuity Testing
High-current injection point-to-point testing that finds what visual inspection can't: corroded conductors, failed connections, and isolated equipment grounds — mapped and ranked by severity.
Touch & Step Voltage Assessment
Measured touch and step potentials at fences, operating handles, equipment, and gates — evaluated against IEEE 80 tolerable body-current limits for your fault levels and clearing times.
Ground Grid Mapping & As-Builts
Non-destructive location of buried grid conductors and connections, delivered as CAD as-builts. Indispensable for stations with lost or unreliable drawings — and for planning expansions without cutting the grid.
GPR Studies & Remediation Design Support
Ground potential rise analysis, current division studies, and engineering support for grid upgrades. When testing finds a deficiency, we hand you a solution — and can mobilize the crews to build it.
How We Work

From Purchase Order to Stamped Report

A disciplined, repeatable process designed around utility operating realities — clearances, switching windows, and outage schedules.

1
Records Review & Test Plan
Drawings, fault data, prior test history, and site constraints reviewed. A station-specific test plan is issued for your approval before anyone rolls a truck.
2
Coordination & Mobilization
Switching, clearances, site access, and safety briefings coordinated with your operations group. Crews mobilize anywhere in the U.S. within 48 hours.
3
Field Testing
Calibrated instrumentation, documented lead routes, photo logs, and real-time data QA. Anomalies are flagged and verified on site — not discovered later in the office.
4
Analysis & Grid Modeling
Measured data reduced against IEEE 80/81 criteria and your design basis. Soil models, resistance results, and touch/step compliance evaluated station-wide.
5
Report & Remediation Plan
Engineering-grade report with findings, compliance tables, grid maps, and prioritized corrective actions — delivered on schedule, ready for audit.

Beyond Testing

Full-Scope Substation Services

Testing is where we start — not where we stop. As part of a vertically integrated construction group, we self-perform the work our reports recommend.

Ground Grid Remediation & Installation
Conductor additions, exothermic welding, ground rod installation, and full grid extensions for station expansions — built to the same standard we test against.
Substation Civil & Site Work
Grading, drainage, yard stone replacement, oil containment, foundations, and access roads — backed by Truett Civil's full fleet and GPS machine control.
Security Fencing & Physical Hardening
Perimeter fencing, anti-climb upgrades, gates, and access control infrastructure meeting utility physical security requirements.
Yard Restoration & Maintenance
Vegetation management, stone regrading, erosion repair, and housekeeping programs that keep stations inspection-ready year round.
Heavy Haul & Material Logistics
Truett Trucking & Logistics moves equipment, stone, and materials to any site in the country — one contract, one point of accountability.
Emergency & Storm Response
24/7 emergency mobilization for post-event grid assessment, site stabilization, and restoration support. When the call comes, we're already rolling.

The Difference

Why Utilities Choose Truett

01

Nationwide, On Your Schedule

Outage windows don't move for contractors. Our crews mobilize anywhere in the United States within 48 hours — and for emergencies, we answer the phone at 2 a.m. and roll the same night.

02

Testing Backed by a Construction Company

Most testing firms hand you a report and a problem. We hand you a report and a crew. As a vertically integrated group, we self-perform grid remediation, civil work, and logistics — no finger-pointing between vendors.

03

Procurement-Ready Documentation

Certificates of insurance, safety statistics, test procedures, and qualifications packaged the way utility supply chain teams need them. We make it easy to award us the work — and easy to defend the award.
